Best Coffee in Nashville: 8 Shops Ranked by Neighborhood

Nashville's coffee scene doesn't announce itself the way the honky-tonks do, but it's genuinely strong — with roasters and cafes spread across East Nashville, Germantown, 12South, and the Gulch. This guide ranks the best eight, maps them to the neighborhoods where visitors actually spend time, and tells you what to order at each.

Quick tips before you go

No subway between neighborhoods
Nashville has no light-rail connecting its neighborhoods. A rideshare between 12South and East Nashville runs about 15 minutes and $8-12. If you want to hit multiple cafes in a morning, plan a single-neighborhood route — the East Nashville cluster (Barista Parlor, Dose, Retrograde) works well on foot or by bike from Five Points.
Barista Parlor runs later than most
Most Nashville independent cafes close by 5pm. Barista Parlor's East Nashville original stays open until 8pm — making it one of the few specialty stops that works for an afternoon break, not just a morning routine. Good to know if your schedule doesn't allow for a morning stop.
The Well Coffeehouse is a nonprofit
The Well Coffeehouse is run by The Hope Center Nashville and creates jobs for people facing barriers to employment. It has operated since 2009 and has five Nashville-area locations, including one on Music Row. The coffee is genuinely good — the mission is a bonus, not a compensation.

Best coffee in Nashville: the ranked guide

1 The short answer

Nashville's three strongest coffee neighborhoods are East Nashville (the original home of Barista Parlor, now also Dose and Retrograde), 12South (Frothy Monkey's flagship), and Germantown (Steadfast). Downtown options are thinner; Crema in the Gulch and The Well on Music Row are the best choices if you're staying near Lower Broadway.

1. Frothy Monkey (12South) — 2509 12th Ave S. The most complete experience in the city: good house espresso, a full kitchen running all day (breakfast until 5pm, cocktails from 5pm), and a covered patio in one of Nashville's most walkable neighborhoods. The original of four Nashville locations.

2. Barista Parlor (East Nashville) — 519B Gallatin Ave. The cafe that put Nashville on the national specialty coffee map. Opened in 2012 in a converted garage, it remains the city's benchmark for single-origin filter coffee and precisely calibrated espresso. Order the pour-over.

3. Crema (Gulch/Downtown) — 15 Hermitage Ave. Nashville's first dedicated craft roaster, open since 2008, in the Gulch just south of downtown. Crema roasts its own beans and runs a serious filter bar. Order the seasonal single-origin drip.

2 The full ranking

Eight shops, ranked from best overall to best by niche. Price tiers reflect a typical espresso drink. Details checked October 2026; hours and menus change, so confirm before you go.

1. Frothy Monkey — 2509 12th Ave S, 12South — 15 min drive from Lower Broadway, 4 min walk from 12South boutiques — $$ — ranks first for range: house espresso is properly dialed, the kitchen runs all day (breakfast, lunch, cocktails after 5pm), and the covered patio is the best outdoor coffee seat in the city. Four Nashville locations; the 12South flagship is the most complete.
2. Barista Parlor — 519B Gallatin Ave, East Nashville — 5 min walk from the Five Points intersection — $$ — opened 2012 in a converted garage and set the standard for Nashville specialty coffee. Best single-origin filter program in the city. Order the pour-over; the industrial-chic space is as well-considered as the coffee.
3. Crema — 15 Hermitage Ave, Gulch/Downtown — 10 min walk from Lower Broadway — $$ — Nashville's first craft roaster, open since 2008. Roasts on-site, runs a proper filter bar, and has a smaller walk-up outpost inside Pinewood Social a few blocks away. The best downtown-adjacent option for specialty coffee.
4. Dose — 1400 McGavock Pk, East Nashville (Lockeland Springs) — 7 min drive from Five Points — $$ — Counter Culture Coffee with a full pastry case: scones, pies, muffins, and the best gluten-free and vegan options on this list. Order the Barcelona iced coffee (espresso over ice, topped with salted whipped cream). West Nashville location also at 3431 Murphy Rd.
5. Bongo Java — 2007 Belmont Blvd, Belmont/Hillsboro Village — across from Belmont University, 20 min from downtown — $ — Nashville's oldest coffeehouse, open since March 1993 in a converted Victorian house. The coffee is honest, the pastries are solid, and the porch is one of the better places to spend a morning. Hours approximately 7am-5pm daily.
6. Steadfast Coffee — 603 Taylor St, Germantown — 5 min walk from Morgan Park — $$ — one of the most serious single-origin programs in Nashville. Small, focused space with excellent pour-overs and espresso. Opened 2015 and helped establish Germantown as a specialty coffee neighborhood.
7. Retrograde Coffee — 1305 Dickerson Pike, East Nashville — 10 min from Five Points — $ — indie roaster with a no-fuss setup and genuinely good espresso. A local's pick in the quieter part of East Nashville. Multiple Nashville locations now open; the Dickerson Pike original has the most character.
8. The Well Coffeehouse — 1000 16th Ave S, Music Row — 2 blocks from the Music Row RCA Studio B, 15 min walk from downtown hotels — $$ — a nonprofit coffeehouse creating jobs for people facing barriers to employment. Open since 2009, five Nashville-area locations, good espresso and food. The most convenient quality option near the Vanderbilt and Belmont hotel corridor.

3 How we ranked

These are our picks, not an algorithmic ranking. We weighed four things: coffee quality (bean sourcing, roast transparency, espresso calibration, filter coffee execution), consistency (does it deliver on repeat visits?), atmosphere (can you sit and stay, or is it a grab-and-go box?), and accessibility for visitors (is it in a neighborhood worth visiting anyway?). Food and other offerings counted only as a tiebreaker.

Chains were excluded. Frothy Monkey has multiple locations but is independently owned and operated. Ratings and review counts were not used — they fluctuate with tourism patterns, are easily gamed, and tell you less about a coffee shop than an hour over a well-dialed pour-over.

These eight places represent shops where the floor is high and a bad experience is genuinely unlikely. Call them our picks, not gospel.

4 Best for...

Best overall experience: Frothy Monkey in 12South — the widest range of quality coffee, food, and seating in a single location.

Best for serious coffee: Barista Parlor in East Nashville — the most thoughtful single-origin program in the city, in a space designed to match.

Best near Lower Broadway: Crema in the Gulch — 10 minutes on foot from the honky-tonk strip, no chains involved.

Best for brunch + coffee in one stop: Dose in East Nashville — Counter Culture Coffee with a serious pastry case and Nashville's best gluten-free and vegan cafe options.

Best historic/neighborhood feel: Bongo Java in Belmont — Nashville's oldest coffeehouse in a Victorian house, essentially unchanged since the mid-1990s.

Best in Germantown: Steadfast Coffee — small, serious, worth the detour if you're already in the neighborhood.

Best with a social mission: The Well Coffeehouse on Music Row — nonprofit model, good coffee, convenient for the downtown hotel corridor.

Best for remote work: Frothy Monkey and The Well are the most consistently laptop-friendly; Barista Parlor and Dose have WiFi but operate as neighborhood cafes first, so very busy mornings aren't ideal for multi-hour work sessions.

5 Near Lower Broadway and by neighborhood

Nashville's attractions are spread across neighborhoods that don't connect by rail, so matching your coffee stop to where you're spending the morning matters.

Near Lower Broadway and the major downtown hotels: Crema at 15 Hermitage Ave is the best walkable option — about 10 minutes from the honky-tonk strip, in the Gulch. The Well Coffeehouse at 1000 16th Ave S (Music Row) is slightly further but practical if you're heading toward the Vanderbilt or Belmont campuses.

In East Nashville: Barista Parlor on Gallatin Ave is the anchor — it sits on the East Nashville Five Points corridor alongside the neighborhood's restaurants and music venues. Dose is 7 minutes further east on McGavock Pk; a good reason to extend the morning into the Lockeland Springs part of the neighborhood.

In Germantown: Steadfast Coffee on Taylor St is the main draw, with Barista Parlor's Germantown outpost at 1230 4th Ave N as a larger backup.

In 12South/Hillsboro Village: Frothy Monkey on 12th Ave S anchors the neighborhood. Bongo Java is 10 minutes north on Belmont Blvd (Hillsboro Village) — quieter and more residential.

6 Hours, seating and what to know before you go

Do these shops take reservations? No — all operate walk-in. Frothy Monkey's 12South location gets crowded on weekend mornings; arriving before 9am or after 11am avoids the longest waits.

What are typical hours? Most open at 7am and close between 4pm and 8pm. Frothy Monkey runs the latest (8pm at 12South and East Nashville locations). Bongo Java closes at 5pm. Steadfast and Barista Parlor vary by day and location — always check the shop's website or map listing before a long trip.

Cash or card? All accept cards. Tipping via the card terminal is standard — typically a 15-20% prompt. None are cash-only.

What about parking? Nashville is a driving city, but street parking near 12South and Five Points in East Nashville is limited on weekend mornings. Rideshare or bike from downtown works well for most of these neighborhoods; Germantown near Steadfast has easier street parking.

Is Nashville good for remote work in cafes? Better than average. Frothy Monkey and The Well are explicitly laptop-friendly at non-peak hours. Barista Parlor and Dose have WiFi but fill up on weekday mornings — go before 8am or after 10am for a reliable seat.

7 What to order and how Nashville coffee culture works

What should I order if I don't know where to start? At Barista Parlor, a single-origin pour-over — ask what's on the filter bar. At Crema, the seasonal single-origin drip. At Frothy Monkey, the house latte with your choice of milk. At Dose, the Barcelona iced coffee — espresso over ice with salted whipped cream. At Bongo Java, the house drip and whatever's in the pastry case.

Is Nashville known for a particular style of coffee? Not the way New Orleans has cafe au lait or Seattle has its drip culture. Nashville's independent cafes lean toward specialty espresso and filter coffee with transparent sourcing — similar to what you'd find in Portland or Brooklyn. The honky-tonk strip itself runs mostly chains and counter-service spots; the good coffee is in the neighborhoods.

Should I combine a coffee stop with anything else? The 12South corridor around Frothy Monkey has boutique shopping and restaurants worth lingering in. East Nashville — Barista Parlor's home turf — is one of Nashville's most walkable neighborhoods for food, record shops, and live music venues. And if you're near Lower Broadway after coffee at Crema, the full history of the strip, including the Ryman Auditorium and the underground stories beneath it, is covered in TourMe's Nashville collections.
