Scout your western horizon before eclipse day
The sun will be just 11 degrees above the horizon at totality — lower than you think. A two-story building, a low ridge, or a stand of trees to your west can block the eclipse entirely. Visit your chosen viewing spot a day early, ideally at the same time of evening, and check for obstacles in the direction the sun sets. High, open viewpoints with flat western terrain are essential.
Burgos to Madrid: 2 hours by Renfe Alvia
Renfe Alvia trains from Madrid-Chamartín to Burgos-Rosa de Lima station take 1 hour 55 minutes and run several times daily. The fare is typically €25-40. Book at renfe.com. Same-day return is possible — last trains back to Madrid depart Burgos around 21:30-22:00, after the eclipse is fully over. Hotels inside the path of totality are heavily booked; day-trip from Madrid is a realistic option.

Your guide to watching Spain's August 12 total solar eclipse

1. Why this eclipse is different: a second sunset over northern Spain

Most total solar eclipses happen in daylight — the sky darkens at midday, the stars appear briefly, the corona blazes, and then afternoon returns. The August 12, 2026 eclipse does something rarer. Totality reaches Spain at approximately 20:26 local time. The sun will be only 11 degrees above the western horizon when the moon's shadow arrives.

At that angle, the corona appears against a sky that is already beginning to show the colors of dusk. The horizon glows with compressed sunset tones while the corona rings the black disc above it. Animals respond to the sudden darkness as if it were night. The shadow crosses Spain in about eight minutes.

Totality duration peaks at approximately 1 minute 45 seconds in the central corridor — León, Burgos, and the Valladolid area. Moving away from the central line shortens this rapidly. Bilbao, on the northern edge of the path, may see only 30 to 60 seconds of totality depending on exact position. Madrid is outside the path entirely and will experience approximately 80-90% coverage — significant dimming, but no corona and no totality.

The Balearic Islands also fall in the path. Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza will see totality just after 20:31, low on the western horizon over the Mediterranean. If you are already on the islands in August, you have an eclipse viewing location built in.

3. Burgos: the strongest combination of history and 1:45 of darkness

Burgos sits almost exactly on the central line of totality. Totality here lasts approximately 1 minute 45 seconds. The city is 250 km north of Madrid via the A-1 motorway — a 2.5-hour drive or under 2 hours by Renfe Alvia from Madrid-Chamartín to Burgos-Rosa de Lima station.

The recommended viewing location is the Mirador del Castillo — the elevated viewpoint above the old city among the ruins of the Castle of Burgos on Calle Fernán González. The castle sits on a hill with a wide, unobstructed western view across the Castilian Meseta. City authorities have designated it as an official public observation point for August 12. Arrive no later than 18:30 to secure a position and observe the partial phases as they build.

Burgos has also organized eclipse-specific events: the Cathedral of Burgos on Plaza de Santa María — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with construction dating to 1221, and the burial place of El Cid — will project astronomical imagery onto its Gothic facade on the evening of August 11. The Museo de la Evolución Humana on Paseo de la Sierra de Atapuerca, which documents findings from Atapuerca (the oldest hominin site in Europe, 15 km from Burgos), will run talks on how ancient civilizations interpreted solar eclipses.

4. León and Zaragoza: the two best alternatives

León offers near-identical totality duration to Burgos (approximately 1 minute 42 to 45 seconds) and sits slightly further west in the path, so totality arrives a minute or two earlier — around 20:28 local time. The terrain approaching León from the south is genuinely flat Meseta, which helps with western horizon clearance. The old city rewards a day-before visit: the Cathedral of León on Plaza de la Regla holds over 1,800 square meters of medieval stained glass — 125 windows that flood the interior with colored light and have earned it the name La Catedral de la Luz. The Panteón de los Reyes attached to the Royal Collegiate Church of San Isidoro contains Romanesque frescoes often described as the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art. For eclipse viewing, the open fields south and west of the historic center, or the elevated terrace of the Parador de León, offer clear sightlines. Those with a rental car should consider Las Médulas, 25 km from Ponferrada — Roman gold-mine ruins rising from eroded red hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with panoramic western views that would make for extraordinary eclipse photography.

Zaragoza is the choice if weather is your primary concern. The Ebro valley has historically clear August skies — measurably better cloud-cover odds than the higher-elevation Meseta cities to the north. Totality arrives at approximately 20:30 local time. The best viewing position in the city is the riverbank of the Ebro in the Parque Grande José Antonio Labordeta, with open western views. The city has planned public viewing events there. For maximum weather insurance combined with flat open terrain, the Bardenas Reales natural park in southern Navarra — 90 km north of Zaragoza — is within the path of totality, has badlands-flat terrain, and August is its driest month. The landscape of eroded clay buttes and semi-desert plain offers some of the most dramatic eclipse backdrops available anywhere on the path.

5. The timing: what happens when, minute by minute

The eclipse unfolds over roughly four hours from first contact to last. Here is the sequence for Burgos (times vary by ±5 to 10 minutes depending on your exact position in the path):

**~18:30 local time — First contact.** The partial phase begins. The moon takes its first bite out of the sun's edge. Eclipse glasses on. The light change is subtle at first — colors begin to shift quality before brightness noticeably dims.
**~19:30 — The dimming becomes unmistakable.** About 70% coverage. The light has a compressed, metallic quality. Animals and birds may begin responding. Shadows sharpen and then become unusually defined.
**~20:10 — Baily's beads appear.** As the last sliver of sun remains, the lunar terrain breaks the light into a string of bright points along the moon's edge — the 'beads' effect described by British astronomer Francis Baily in 1836. This is your signal that totality is 5 to 10 minutes away.
**~20:26 — Totality begins.** Eclipse glasses off — this is the only moment when unprotected viewing is safe. The corona appears: the sun's outer atmosphere, visible only during totality, extends several solar diameters in irregular streamers shaped by the sun's magnetic field. Temperature drops. Stars appear. The horizon glows sunset orange while the sky overhead turns deep blue-black.
**~20:28 — Totality ends.** A brilliant flash — the 'diamond ring' — marks the return of the sun's edge. Eclipse glasses back on immediately. The partial phase resumes in reverse, lasting another two-plus hours.
**~22:30 — Last contact.** The moon's disc leaves the sun entirely. Normal evening resumes.

6. Can I still make the trip? Getting there from Madrid and booking logistics

From Madrid. The A-1 motorway runs directly to Burgos (250 km, ~2.5 hours without traffic). Renfe Alvia trains from Madrid-Chamartín to Burgos-Rosa de Lima take 1 hour 55 minutes; several services daily. For Zaragoza, Renfe AVE from Madrid-Atocha takes 1 hour 20 minutes and runs frequently. León by Alvia from Madrid-Chamartín takes approximately 2 hours. Day-trip from Madrid is feasible for all three cities; plan to arrive by early afternoon to scout viewing positions before the partial phases begin.

Accommodation. Hotels directly in the path of totality — Burgos old city especially — have been booking since 2025. Rural casas rurales in villages between Burgos and Valladolid still have availability. Search Booking.com and rural.es for last-minute options along the A-1 corridor.

Is it worth going if I'm already in Spain? Yes, unambiguously. A partial eclipse, even at 90% coverage, does not produce totality — no corona, no stars, no shadow. The boundary is absolute: you are either in the path or you are not. 7. What totality actually looks and feels like

The final minutes before totality: the light goes wrong before it goes dark. Colors lose their normal warmth. Shadows become unusually crisp. The temperature drops — observers on the Spanish Meseta in August should expect a 4 to 8 degree Celsius drop in under two minutes. Then the sky above you darkens abruptly, the corona appears around the black disc of the moon, and the western horizon glows sunset orange while Venus and the brighter stars become visible overhead.
